Useless Tricks

As the hock fracture continues to heal, Riley has been working very hard on some tricks for her fans.  Please hold your applause until the end.
Okay, you can clap now. Ha!

This is one of those times when clicker training is so helpful.  Although I am not using a clicker (to avoid exciting the other dogs in the house), Riley is still very used to offering behaviors that are marked and rewarded when correct.  While I had some ideas of my own, it is also fun to see what the dog comes up with as well.  "Pig nose" was something Riley dreamed up and I simply marked it so she would repeat it.

pig nose is hilarious!!!! I love how she learned to pick up the bottle even though it was clearly a bit weird to her at first.

How funny! Pig nose is a very creative trick. Good idea Riley. My aunt taught her dog a similar "chin" trick. The dog liked to put her head in laps and look up with puppy dog eyes. Great for parties.

So sweet! Your blog inspires me to keep working with my greyhound, even though she doesn't have very much endurance. It's amazing what they can learn working just 10 minutes once or twice a day. Thank you!

Love "pig nose"! And "head down" could be pretty useful for asking her to calm down... not that most greyhounds need any help with that one!

Ahhh! Jealous of her hold. Elli likes to toss objects at me, lol, so Hold is quite far off in her future.

One of my KPA groupmates was talking about someone who trained her Beagle to identify the aces in a deck of cards, so that as the final behavior, he could pick all four out of a stacked deck. The beagle was recovering from an injury, like Riley!

Never seen the 'pig nose' before. Gonna have to see if any of my kids are up for learning it.

Pig nose! Oh, that's my giggle for tonight!

Are you sure you don't want to teach her to pick up the remote for you? Think of the possibilities!

Riley may have started a trend here -- Lucy and Walter are going to get to work on learning the pig nose too! Loved the video :-)
